[batrep] Warhammer 40k - Epic narrative Space Wolves vs Thousand Sons game

This was a fantastic game where we joined two tables and four armies in two narrative and simultaneous battles that told a story.

On one half of the table we had an attacking Space Wolf force trying to Rescue a lone Rune Priest who had discovered a force of the Thousand Sons legion performing a ritual during the invasion of Fenris.

The objective for the space wolves on this table was to invade the territory and locate the Rune Priest before a host of Demons of Tzeench could assassinate him!

The Icy landscape of the ruined settlement outpost held the location of the hidden Rune Priest. Some cultist patrolled the area and any suspicion could bring the demons from the warp, so speed and cunning where key for the space wolves victory!

A group of Swiftclaws, scouts and grey hunters deploys at the edge of the search area.

The chaos cultists have a hard time seeing through the hailing snowstorm, but each of them tenses up at the strange sounds brought by the wind.

Stalking their prey, the Vlka Fenryka prepare for their incursion.

Across the battlefield a score of Space Wolves infiltrate the ruined city to Sabotage the ritual performed by Arhiman and his Thousand sons.

Grey Hunters and Thunderwolves cross the frozen ruins, their enemies cloaked by fell spirits and spells.

After infiltrating the terrain, the space wolves have not found the missing Rune Priest yet, but the chaos cultists have spotted them and materialize out of thin air.

Swirling masses of color shifting horrors emerge from rifts on the wind and a giant Demon Prince of Tzeench soars over it all.

The roaring engines of the Swiftclaws are only defeated by the roaring of the Wolf Lord's Thunderwolf, ready to charge against the unending tide of demons.

The brave warriors of the Rout have come to defend their land!

The abominations of the Warp materialize with malicious intent. If the Rune Priest Spy has not be located, the souls of these warriors will suffice for their incantations.

The horrors laugh and delight themselves with the fight, each vying for the casting of the better spell that will draw their master's attention.

Inside of the city ruins, the Space Wolves have located the ritual site and lifted the veil of their enemies. Scores of filthy chaos cultists contrast with the ornamented armor of the Rubric marines.

Arhiman himself has orchestrated this ritual and happily sees that their hatred enemies are driving right into their trap. Fenris is already doomed, he thinks as he smites yet an other grey hunter approaching the ritual site.

The search for the missing Rune Priest Spy continues as the Demons overtake a frozen ridge and provide a formidable obstacle for the marines.

Breaking from the pack, the Wolf Lord and Rune Priest plan on engaging the horde and buying time for the other warriors to locate their spy.

The gibbering horrors delight on the chaos of battle.

Swiftclaws gain some territory to move in with the valiant charge of their brothers.

Fearsome flamers are poised to strike at them, however, and the search for their informant will cost the rout dearly.

A host of demons also breaks loose on the ritual site.

The Thunderwolf cavalry clash with the Scarab Occult terminators as they attempt to sabotage the ritual.

Arhiman unleashes a barrage of spells perched high above from his flying disk of Tzeench.

The Demon Prince flies over the battle to engage the Swiftclaws, spelling their doom with his blazing sword.

A group of skyclaws intercept a horde of demons from intercepting the space wolf invasion forces.

A lone skyclaw sergeant defiantly holds the demons at bay.

The space wolves assault start to thin against the unspeakable horrors of the warp.

The herald of Tzeench, however, is sigled out by a group of grey hunters led by a savage Wolf Guard in terminator armor.

His impervious armor staves off the demons claws and teeth and he carves his way to the Herald, felling the demon and sending it back to it's master for punishment.

The Wolf Lord and his Thunderwolf claw and maim the pink horde, but each felled demon splits and duplicates after their blows in what seems as an unending tide of horrors.

Having dealt with the Swiftclaws, the Demon Prince circles back towards the heroes still left standing.

The ruins run red with the blood paid to sabotage the ritual, but the ferocity of the invader Thunderwolves is hardly contained by the enemy terminators.

In an epic clash Arhiman personaly challenges the anvil, Arjac Rockfist, in a duel as he attempts to prevent the disruption of his ritual.

Arhiman is struck down and vanishes in thin air with a curse.

Arjack and his surviving packmates fight to the last man to stop Arhiman's plans.

The games end in a switched victory/defeat as the Space Wolves outside of the ruins fail to rescue their spy rune priest. Inside of the city, however, Arjack and his Thunderwolves have successfully disrupted whatever ritual Arhiman had started and saved countless lives from their sacrifice.

This was an epic game night and I am glad that we could combine our armies and terrain in such manner. This was the stuff of legend and the reason I play 40k for.
